An asphalt pad sits ready for equipment today as city skateboarders eagerly await the opening of the new recreational facility.

The pad sits behind the YMCA and next to the toboggan hill in Thomson Park.

The pavement is a temporary location, and will become a parking lot once a permanent, concrete pad is laid in the next two years.

A half million dollar fundraising campaign is about to kick off to the raise money required to build the permanent park.

Other skate parks have been located at the West Ferris Arena and last year, at Lee park. But complaints from nearby residents about noise and vandalism prompted another move.

The Thomson Park location is favoured by council because it it central and close to bus routes.

The temporary location should be open in the next few days.
