Flood outlook issued for North Bay - Mattawa

The potential for flooding from 30-65 mm of rain forecast for the watershed through to Friday has prompted the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority to issue a Water Conditions Statement - Flood Outlook.

"The moist system coming from the American south is bringing with it extensive rainfall activity.  There is a variation in forecasted amounts, which range between 30-65mm through to Friday.  However, any rainfall received in this range, combined with the potential for convective thunderstorms, may result in flooding," said Susan Brownlee, Regulations Officer.

NBMCA staff continues to closely monitor conditions in local waterways that drain into the Mattawa River, as well as the Wasi River, Duchesnay Creek, Chippewa Creek and the La Vase River.  In these areas, in addition to fast-reacting watercourses such as Chippewa Creek, the forecasted precipitation may be of added concern with the potential to cause additional flooding.

"The North Bay-Mattawa watershed is continuing to recover from a wet April.  Water levels in area watercourse have been decreasing, but the rain we've had since last Friday is keeping levels high in some watercourses," she added.

Municipalities are encouraged to monitor water crossings to ensure the continual movement of water through culverts and bridges.  A close watch on local conditions and updated forecasts and warnings from Environment Canada is also recommended.
