Canadore students embark on a community service learning trip

Eleven dedicated Canadore College students are leaving for the Dominican Republic today to be a part of a community service learning trip.

The mission is designed to build skills, personal character and hope for a better future.

For a full week, students will focus on teaching underprivileged children English language skills.

This is the second year that students will travel to the Dominican Republic.

Canadore Residence Life Coordinator and trip organizer, Jessica Charbonneau, also just returned from a service learning trip to Moose Factory, Ont.

“Each trip has its own unique traits,” said Charbonneau.

“I look forward to going back this year. I think it will be even more meaningful because we’ve established a trust relationship. I hope to see that some of the work that last year’s students really did make a lasting positive difference.”

Two out of nine students from last year’s trip to the Dominican Republic have decided to return to deepen their experiences.

In addition, two students from last month’s Moose Factory trip are also going to be continuing their learning journey abroad.

Canadore is one of the first colleges in Ontario to team up with Outreach360, a grass-roots volunteer organization focused on providing education to disadvantaged children around the world.

The College’s students will be using Outreach’s Monte Cristi Learning Center as a home base and will also be working within school and community centres to teach.

Students were chosen after a stringent selection process which included application requests, screening and interviewing.

The committee chose students who showed a passion for volunteering, had a strong sense of community and the desire to learn and grow.

The selected students from various areas of study have been meeting bi-weekly since November to learn about the mission, including cultural sensitivity training, native language, fundraising techniques and understanding expectations.
