On Thursday, February 27, 2014 Minister of Northern Development and Mines Michael Gravelle issued the following statement:
“It was one year ago, in March 2013, that I created the Minister’s Advisory Committee on the ONTC. Over that time we have had some frank and important discussions about the future of the ONTC and have reached a consensus that the status quo is no longer an option, but that divestment is not the only path before us.
I was pleased to meet again today with my advisory committee.
We were happy to have the opportunity to hear from representatives from the General Chairperson's Association (GCA) and ONTC’s management team.
I appreciate the efforts of both management and labour and recognize that considerable work that has gone into the preparation of their integrated business plan.
The report will be useful as we continue to explore options in moving forward with the ONTC transformation.
I can say that I am encouraged to know that the union, ONTC management and the MAC all agree that change is needed.
We have challenges ahead of us but we share a commitment to finding a sustainable solution for transportation and telecommunication services in Northern Ontario.
We continue to explore options as we move forward with the ONTC transformation. Today’s discussions will definitely help guide that process.
Our goal throughout this process remains unchanged; ensuring northern communities and industries benefit from viable, efficient and sustainable transportation and communications systems.
Indeed, our government is committed to its role in supporting a, resilient, prosperous regional economy that attracts people and investments - and jobs - to Northern Ontario.
We will continue our work and thoroughly examine all options with the goal of finding a sustainable solution for the ONTC that serves the interests of Northerners.”
