Near North Student Robotics Initiative

The Near North Student Robotics Initiative showed true team spirit at the Vex robotics competition in Scarborough on Saturday by winning the Energy Award. The judges joked that the team "was a cold shower" who woke the sleepy audience early Saturday morning with noise-makers, glitter wigs and the spirited Captain ice Cubed to lead cheers. Three high school teams with a total of 35 students from grade 7-12 competed in a 72 team field at Woburn Collegiate. The robots competed in a game called "Toss Up" which featured two sizes of balls including the largest game pieces ever used in the Vex Competition.
The Vex event is considered a training ground for learning design and problem-solving skills and is also a great team builder for new members. On Friday, the team visited Underwriters Laboratories and saw a safety test lab for household products like smoke and carbon dioxide detectors. The busy team continues work next week with a sponsor dinner, hospital Lego project, promotional robot and a game analysis workshop.
