A new publication being launched at Gulliver’s Quality Books will help readers understand why they’re seeing more First Nations stories in the news.

“Every Canadian student and citizen should read Nation to Nation,” says Anishinabek Nation Grand Council Chief Patrick Madahbee.

“Most people have little or no understanding that the Treaty relationship with First Nations peoples is the foundation on which their country was built.  When First Nations hold demonstrations against mining practices that threaten the environment, or oppose sales taxes imposed by other governments, we’re not blocking progress or creating conflict – we’re upholding the rule of law that goes back 250 years.”

“Nation to Nation: a resource on treaties in Ontario”, is a first-of-its-kind publication. The 70-page booklet is an ideal resource for teachers, journalists and treaty researchers, as well as a suitable text for secondary and post-secondary learners.

The well-illustrated text was produced by treaty researcher Dr. David Shanahan, Anishinabek educator and historian Alan Corbiere, and Maurice Switzer, director of communications for the Union of Ontario Indians and editor of the Anishinabek News.

Content includes basic definitions and historic context for treaties in the four regions of Anishinabek Nation territory, with emphasis on Robinson-Huron, Robinson Superior, Chippewa and Williams Treaties.

Also included are several examples of how First Nations can use treaty and land claim settlements as the basis for developing community economies.

“Nation to Nation” retails for $40 and received support from Ontario's Ministry of Aboriginal Affairs.
