Under the tutelage of West Ferris teacher Stuart Bowness grade 6, 7 and 8 students from the feeder schools are taking on the “Outdoor Mosaic Shed Challenge”.

The students are charged with designing and constructing an 8’x10’ shed.

The winning shed, which will store learning materials to inspire creative, active outdoor experiences, will be located at the new elementary school (Silver Birches Public School), which will welcome students in September of 2014.

Board officials say the project is a teaching tool far beyond a regular school project as the opportunity allows students to expand their understanding of the trades, develop essential math skills, and also serves as a community building effort as the students get work with their peers at the high school level while producing something that will benefit students in lower grades.

“It’s kids building for kids,” says Bowness.

Through the shed challenge activity students learn “hands-on” how to safely and properly use a variety of hand tools and at the same time applying real-life math learning experience.
