City woman dies in MVC on Hwy 63 Update

On the 5th of October 2013, a motor vehicle was traveling eastbound on Hwy 63 between Peninsula Rd and Daly's Road when it struck a pedestrian. The pedestrian was wearing dark clothing and walking down the road in an unlit part of highway. The driver of the motor vehicle did not see the pedestrian in time to prevent a collision

No charges will be laid

SAFETY TIPS WHEN WALKING DOWN HIGHWAY

Walk Facing Traffic-If there is no sidewalk you must walk on the side of the road, facing traffic.

Cross Safely- Look both ways before crossing any street

Walk Single File-Unless you are on a sidewalk separated from the road or a wide bike lane, you should walk in single file. This is expecially important on a road with a lot of curves, where traffic has only a split second chance of seeing you before hitting you.

Be Visible-Wear bright colours when walking in daytime. When walking at night, wear light-colored clothing and reflective clothing or a reflective vest to be visible. Drivers are often not expecting walkers to be out after dark and you need to give them every chance to see you. Be cautious at dawn and twilight, as drivers still have limited visibility or may even have the setting or rising sun directly in ther eyes.

Keep the volume Down-Don't drown out your envrionment with your iPod. Keep the volume down where you can still hear other walkers, veihcles or bicycles.

On the 5th of October 2013, at approximately 7:47pm, officers from the North Bay OPP were dispatched to a single motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian on Hwy 63 in the city of North Bay.

The pedestrian was transported by ambulance to the North Bay Regional Health Unit where she was pronounced deceased.

The investigation continues with the assistance of the OPP Technical Traffic Collisions Investigations Unit.

Hwy 63 was closed down to one lane for several hours but has since been completely reopened.
