Are you a Customer of Ray’s Hairstyling -- Please call the Health UnitMonday, September 30, 2013 by: Kate AdamsNorth Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit
North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit is urging clients who received shaving services from Ray’s Hairstyling, 273 Main St W, North Bay to call the Health Unit at 705-474-1400, ext. 2229. This is part of an investigation into potential exposure to inadequately cleaned and disinfected shaving equipment and the reuse of single-use razor blades.
“At this time, we have no evidence of the spread of infectious disease,” stated Dr. Jim Chirico, Medical Officer of Health. “However, there is a low risk because single-use razor blades were reused and the shaving equipment was not cleaned or disinfected adequately at this establishment.”
The Health Unit emphasizes that this advisory is being issued as a precaution. “It is our responsibility to provide information to the public about practices that may result in infection, even when the risk is very low, so people can make informed decisions about their health,” says Dr. Chirico.
The operator is unable to provide the Health Unit with a list of clients. Therefore, it is important anyone who received shaving services with a razor blade from Ray’s Hairstyling call the Health Unit at 705-474-1400, ext. 2229 or 1-800-563-2808. The Health Unit will provide information to clients about any potential blood-borne infection.
“You can protect yourself at your local hair salon or barber from infectious diseases,” said Cathy Menzies-Boulé, Executive Director, Clinical Services/Chief Nursing Officer. “Make sure when you receive a shave to your face or the back of your neck you ask the barber to use a new, single-use disposable razor or razor blade. It is also important to ask if all parts of the shaving equipment are cleaned and disinfected between each customer.”
