Tuesday the North Bay Regional Health Centre (NBRHC) Foundation announced new community fundraising initiatives that will help the hospital provide more advanced levels of care for children.

“We are helping the community raise the combined three million dollars needed for both women & babies in
our community and children and adolescents,” says Lachlan McLachlan, Foundation chair.

As the referral centre for births in the district, including high risk and multiple births, the Foundation will be asking for support of the hospital’s purchase of a state-of-the-art central fetal monitor system.

“This $1.25 system will help us identify problems earlier during labour and delivery; it will save lives by shortening response time,” says Kim Carter, Program Manager, Women & Children’s Care Centre.

Also a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Unit is being implemented at North Bay Regional Health Centre (NBRHC). The program currently offered at the Kirkwood Site of NBRHC in Sudbury, is being divested to four hub hospitals within our region. North Bay Regional Health Centre will receive four beds to form a six bed unit.

“Children and adolescents, up to the age of 18, who need this care will be able to remain closer to home for their recovery. This will reduce hardship to families who are already dealing with the difficulty of having their child in treatment. Creating this specialized care environment will cost $1.7M.” Carter adds.

Today the Foundation also unveiled a number of new and returning events for the next year, including the return of the Celebrity Speaker Series in partnership with the Canadian Mental Health Association, Nipissing Regional Branch. 2014 speakers are Valerie and Catherine Pringle.

“We are thrilled that this mother daughter duo will be coming to the Capitol Centre May 29th to share their family’s experience with mental illness,” says Jody Polec, CMHA Nipissing President.

Other upcoming NBRHC Foundation events include:
Seventh Annual Hospital Walk Run The Foundation’s Our Hospital Walk Run is on Sunday, October 20th. New this year is the High School Team Challenge.

“We throw down the challenge to every high school in our area to try to beat us in participation and pledge points!” goads Regan Jackson, Widdifield Secondary School
Team Captain.

Papa Joe Ride - 20th Anniversary ~the Final Journey

It is a fitting tribute to Papa Joe who loved to ride.” Don Lefebvre.

“Our family was the first in our community to make a major commitment to the MRI campaign. With the funds we raise this year, we are hoping to complete our pledge of $150,000.” Diana Lefebvre adds.
