Search on Lake Nipissing for missing boater Update

On the 25 August 2013, at approximately 12:45pm, the North Bay OPP were dispatched to a capsized aluminum fishing boat by the Manitou Islands on Lake Nipissing. The North Bay OPP Marine Unit attended the area and located a female in distress on Little Manitou Island.

The female advised police that she was in a fishing boat with a male when their boat started to sink. They both started to swim to shore, and she made it to the Island.

An extensive search was initiated for the male party by the North Bay OPP, North East Region SAVE Team, OPP Helicopter Unit and friends and family of the victim.

A male body was located 26 August 2013 at approximately 9:30am by the Great Manitou Island.

Deceased is Daniel Mantha (52yrs old) 959 Morin Street, North Bay, Ontario

BayToday has learned that a dive team is currently searching for a missing person on Lake Nipissing after a mishap Sunday.

Sources tell BayToday the couple left in their boat from the Couchie Memorial Drive area and later in the day capsized between the North Bay shore and the islands.

The female passenger swam for four hours to the island for help the male passenger is still missing and believed drowned.
