As September approaches, the Nipissing-Parry Sound Student Transportation Services (NPSSTS) is helping JK and SK students take some of the apprehension out of their first few days on the bus.

The First Rider Program, sponsored by the NPSSTS and presented by Stock Transportation gives first year students the chance to ride a school bus and learn about the rules and safety precautions they will be required to follow.

“It’s a really exciting opportunity,” said Lena Cormier, General Manager at Stock Transportation. “Taking a bus for the first time can be an anxious experience for students and parents, and this is a fun way for them to ease some of their worries and learn about school bus safety.”

The program is being presented at Stock Transportation, 59 Commerce Crescent, North Bay. Following registration, students and parents will watch a short safety video on the ‘movie bus’. Afterwards, while the students take their very first bus ride (including a stop to practice transfer procedures for those who need it), the parents will take part in an information session. When the students return, they receive a certificate, popcorn, juice and a colouring book.

“Statistically, school buses are the safest form of ground transportation. The NPSSTS makes student safety our number one priority,” said Daniel Johnston, Operations Manager with the NPSSTS. “The First Rider Program continues to promote school bus safety and also helps establish a comfort level for both young students and their parents.”

Parents wishing to register their children for a session are asked to call the NPSSTS at 705-472-8840. Multiple sessions are available on August 16, 17, 22, and 24, with French sessions being held August 17 and 22.
