The North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority (NBMCA) is calling all environmental heroes to action. It is time again for the NBMCA Environmental Awards and the September 30th deadline is fast approaching.

“Ordinary people, businesses, and organizations are doing extraordinary things to conserve, preserve, protect, and/or enhance our watershed and the natural environment. This is NBMCA’s way of recognizing those whose actions and deeds are making a difference,” said Brian Tayler, CAO.

The Environmental Awards recognize innovative, collaborative efforts which have a positive, sustainable impact on our local watershed, promote stewardship with measurable results, and align with NBMCA’s mission of balancing human needs with the needs of the natural environment.

NBMCA presents two awards to individuals and/or organizations which embody the spirit and actions of an environmental hero.

The Ward Smith Environmental Award recognizes a youth or youth group for their interest and involvement in protecting, improving or conserving the environment in our local watershed.

The Dorothy Walford Memorial Award salutes an individual or group who make a significant and valuable environmental contribution in our local watershed through word, thought, effort or deed.

The winners receive a $500 grant from the Foster Wild Environmental Fund to be donated to environmental organization or project on their behalf.

People can apply for themselves or nominate an individual, organization, business, school or community group. Anyone who lives within NBMCA’s jurisdiction, including the septic and source water program jurisdictions is eligible. Applications are due September 30th and can be found on the NBMCA website www.nbmca.on.ca, by contacting NBMCA through email at [email protected] or phone 705-474-5420. An awards reception will be held on November 7, 2013.

The North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority was founded in 1972 by the Province of Ontario and its 10 member municipalities. A non-profit organization, the NBMCA works closely with the public to balance human needs with environmental needs throughout the region’s watershed. The NBMCA is one of 36 Conservation Authorities who are members of Conservation Ontario.
