North Bay's Mark Clout wins 37th Annual Mattawa River Canoe Race

Thirty Five teams from across Ontario and Quebec took part in the grueling 64km race, sanctioned Ontario Marathon Canoe and Kayak Racing Association, saw top competitors in a number of classes competing in a variety of categories including a team of OPP officers.

Paddlers left Olmsted Beach battling headwinds, tackling five mandatory portages to end at the Mattawa Island Conservation Area.

Officials confirm that North Bay's Mark Clout and teammate Stan Anusiewicz of Brights Grove captured the Fastest Overall Time trophy with a time of 6 hours 19 minutes and 48 seconds, just 16 secs ahead of second place finishers Dean Brown of Hamilton and Bob Vincent of Dorchester.

North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority General Manager Brian Tayler says it is important to run the race in order to remember the first highway in the area.

Thirty Five teams from across Ontario and Quebec participated in North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority’s 37th Annual Mattawa River Canoe Race. Paddlers launched from Olmsted Beach, North Bay and made their way through the 64 km trek, five mandatory portages and battling headwinds to Mattawa Island, competing for the top spot in the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority’s race.

Stan Anusiewicz of Brights Grove and Mark Clout of North Bay captured the Fastest Overall Time trophy, finishing with a time of six hours, nineteen minutes and forty-eight seconds, 16 secs ahead of second place finishers Dean Brown of Hamilton and Bob Vincent of Dorchester.

An additional five teams took part in the 13 km family race, launched from Samuel de Champlain Provincial Park.
