BONFIELD – Members of Local 4616-2 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) and their supporters will attend the Township of Bonfield’s municipal council meeting on Tuesday, July 23, at 6:30 pm, at 365 Highway 531 in Bonfield, to urge the Mayor and Councillors to reopen contract talks and stop threatening to impose cutbacks and contract rollbacks. “It’s time for this employer to stop threatening workers and municipal services, and to resume meaningful bargaining,” says CUPE National Representative Steve Boyle.

Municipal services in the Township of Bonfield are still under the cloud of a lockout or strike threat after the Mayor and Town Council failed to enter into any meaningful mediation talks so far, choosing instead to table a ‘take-it-or-leave-it’ contract offer with concessions and rollbacks that would hurt services and treat workers unfairly, warned CUPE, representing 16 municipal workers in Bonfield.

“We thank residents who have shown our members their support, and the many people who attended the previous council meeting,” says Boyle. “We can only hope Council will get the message and back away from threats and intimidation, and do what it takes to reach a fair settlement without trying to circumvent the bargaining process.”
