The Nipissing District Housing Corporation (NDHC) is taking precautionary measures to ensure the safety and security of their residents as the strike by workers with the International Union of Elevator Constructors Union (IUEC) enters its third month.

Since the strike began, there have been several service calls to repair elevators at social housing residences which come under the management of the NDHC. Until now, at least one of two elevators at the residences was operational. This now is not the case at the Golden Age Towers and the Edgewater Apartments. Both elevators in both buildings are not working, and while work orders have been submitted to the repair companies, there is no guarantee of when they will be serviced.

“Tenant care is a priority. We’re doing everything possible to ensure the safety and security of residents in our buildings,” says Carol Conrad, CEO of the NDHC. “We’ve begun the process of canvassing residents, determining their needs, and ensuring any lack of mobility is dealt with before there’s a problem. Wherever possible, we’re encouraging residents to stay with family and friends. In some cases, we’ll temporarily move residents until the elevators are operational again.”

Due to the strike by IUEC members, there is a backlog of service calls to repair elevators and priority lists are constantly shifting. Because of this, the NDHC has developed a contingency plan that looks towards the end of the summer, and will be continuously updated.

“We are grateful for the assistance we’re receiving from other services in North Bay,” says NDHC Board Chair Judy Koziol. “These are unusual circumstances and the NDHC is planning for every contingency.”

Part of this plan calls for regular updates to residents. Updates, similar to the attached, will be shared with residents and other community services whose assistance may be required in the future.
