Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1987, the INTERNATIONAL DAY AGAINST DRUG ABUSE AND ILLICIT TRAFFICKING is held on the 26th June of each year serves as a reminder of the goals agreed to by UN Member States on the creation of an international society free of drug abuse.

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) selects themes for the International Day and launches campaigns to raise awareness about the global drug problem.

Health is the on going theme of the world drug campaign.
Crime Stoppers International (CSI) is the umbrella body of registered Crime Stoppers programs in twenty (20) countries around the world. There are more than 2500 people from both law enforcement and volunteer civilians who are working in Crime Stoppers world wide to help us fulfil our mission, which is "To mobilize the world to provide information on crime anonymously"

Since 1976, when Crime Stoppers first started in Albuquerque New Mexico, USA, anonymous tips to Crime Stoppers programs throughout the world have resulted in significant numbers of arrests and the seizure of over $8 billion (USD) in illicit drugs. CSI will be supporting the United Nations on this International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking by encouraging our programs to increase awareness in their home communities and most importantly to encourage people to provide information anonymously to their local Crime Stoppers Programs.

The actions of Crime Stoppers programs throughout the world and the information from people who have provided anonymous tips are "Helping to solve a crime every fourteen (14) minutes, somewhere in the world today."

In pledging the support of Crime Stoppers International, CSI President Alexander MacDonald, states, “On this day communities around the world should reflect on the hardship and pain of individuals affected by the abuse of illegal drugs, we need to STOP, PAUSE and REFLECT on what WE can do to make OUR communities safer, and in turn help create a positive environment for OUR families to grow and flourish rather than succumb to the negative influences created by drugs and those who gain profit from the suffering of others. On this day Crime Stoppers encourages communities from around the world to mobilize by providing information on this type of criminal activity anonymously. Lets help stop, solve and prevent crime globally”.

Locally, since 1988, anonymous information provided to Near North Crime Stoppers has allowed Police to seize over $49.9 million in illicit drugs.

Anyone with information on illicit drug activities, or any other crime, can anonymously contact Near North Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS(8477) or by texting the word NIPPER to CRIMES(274637) or online at nearnorthcrimestoppers.com.
