Jay Aspin, Member of Parliament for Nipissing-Timiskaming, announced today on behalf of the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities $299,000 in funding for two safety improvement projects at the Jack Garland Airport.

The North Bay Jack Garland Airport is receiving through the Airports Capital Assistance Program (ACAP), $299,000 for the replacement of a runway sweeper and the rehabilitation of a sand storage building. The new sweeper will ensure the timely and effective removal of snow, slush and ice from runways and taxiways while the rehabilitated sand storage building will protect the sand used for ice control from moisture.

“The North Bay Jack Garland Airport is a vital gateway for local residents, businesses, trade and tourism,” said MP Aspin. “This funding will enhance the safety of all those who use this airport, especially the communities and businesses in Northern Ontario.”

Mr. Aspin explained that Jack Garland Airport is a crucial asset for the region, particularly for our Aerospace sector which will have a stronger presence in North Bay & region. Aerospace has been a particular area of development focus for Mr. Aspin who announced a focused Aerospace Task Force last spring. The Task Force will coordinate regional activities to take advantage of the new focus the Government of Canada has placed on the industry.

“We are setting up the region to benefit from the new strategy,” said MP Aspin. “With our local Aerospace Centre, the Aerospace companies we have operating in North Bay, Canadore Aviation and my involvement as Vice Chair of the National Aerospace Caucus we are well positioned to take advantage of the new national aerospace strategy and funding revealed in Economic Action Plan 2013.”

With the inclusion of today’s announcement, the North Bay Jack Garland Airport has received more than $9 million for 17 projects through ACAP.
