NORTH BAY - On Saturday, the 15th of June 2013 at approximately 10:00 AM, an Officer from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Highway Safety Division (HSD) was patrolling Highway #17 West, in Beaucage Township, which is just west of North Bay, Ontario.

At this time, the officer observed an eastbound motor vehicle travelling at what appeared to be in excess of the posted speed limit of 90 km/h. The officer activated his radar unit and the car's speed registered at 167 km/h. The Officer stopped the car and the driver advised the officer that he had just purchased the car the day before and he wanted to see what it could do!

The driver, a 24 year old North Bay resident, had his drivers license seized for seven (7) days and his 2013, brand new vehicle was impounded for 7 days.

In addition, the driver was charged with Stunt Driving and Speeding. Upon conviction, the driver is liable to a fine of not less than $2,000 and not more than $10,000 or to imprisonment for a term of not more than 6 months, or to both, and in addition his drivers licence may be suspended. He will also be responsible for all fees in relation to the towing and the storage of his car for the 7 day impound period.

Inspector Mark Andrews, Unit Commander, Traffic & Marine for the OPP's Northeast Region commented, "These types of incidents, in which drivers feel the public roads are there for their own pleasure, without regard for the majority of the members of the public and their safety, will continue to be dealt with accordingly."
