Jay Aspin, Member of Parliament for Nipissing-Timiskaming, announced today on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC) and the Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of FedNor and President of the Treasury Board $364,936 in federal support for youth employment in Nipissing-Timiskaming.

“Our government is focused on keeping our economy healthy and growing,” said MP Aspin. “This invariably begins with investing in the future, our youth. The Government of Canada put into place the Youth Employment Strategy (YES) to ensure opportunities were being made for Canadian youth to connect them with the skills and experience they need to succeed in tomorrow’s economy.”

HRSDC provided $319,936 through the Canada Summer Jobs Program. An annual program, Canada Summer Jobs benefits youth and employers by connecting youth with the skills and experience they need to be successful while earning money for the upcoming school year. FedNor provided $45,000 through the Northern Ontario Development Program, a program dedicated to encourage economic growth, job creation, and to support viable business projects in the north.

YES was enhanced through Economic Action Plan 2012 with an additional $50 million of federal support and again in Economic Action Plan 2013 with an additional $70 million over 3 years to help support 5,000 more paid internships. The YES initiative continues to connect young Canadians with jobs that are in demand and helps them develop tangible and transferable skills.

“This month we learned that in May the Canadian economy had added one million net new jobs since the recession,” said MP Aspin. “Part of this impressive achievement, the best in the G7, is our YES initiative which has made more Canadian youth employable and competitive in the job market. Employers are finding skilled Canadians and Canadians are finding good paying jobs, a win-win all around!”
