Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement to mark Father’s Day:

“Today we pay tribute to fathers - both past and present - who have helped shape who we have become today. Through their dedication, love and support, they have equipped us with the tools needed to successfully navigate the world and continue to provide strength to their families.

In addition to promoting a safe and loving environment at home, good fathers also impart discipline, work ethic, respect and wisdom.

My personal experience as a dad has greatly enriched my life, and allowed me to gain an even deeper appreciation of the guidance provided by my own father.

On this special day, let us reflect on how fathers have nurtured, protected and inspired us to achieve our full potential through their words and actions.

Laureen and I encourage Canadians to honour those fathers who have acted as mentors, caregivers, and even heroes, and we wish all families across the country a Happy Father’s Day.”
