Constable Merv Shantz says the torch run is not just important because it brings together all law enforcement agencies together but that it also lets the athletes know that they are behind them.

Meanwhile, On May 8th, 2013 the I.O.D.E. Manitou Chapter recognized Detective Helen Kent for her volunteerism for the Ontario Law Enforcement Torch Run.

Detective Kent was accompanied by Deputy Chief Devine where she was given an award of $100 by Manitou Chapter President Mrs Mary Vassbotn. This money has been donated to the Torch Run.

The Ontario Law Enforcement Torch Run Program has bonded law enforcement communities with Special Olympics and funds generated are used to fund athletes participating in Special Olympics events locally, provincially, nationally and internationally. The Special Olympic program enriches the lives of many individuals in our community and local businesses and organizations in our community provide ongoing support each year through the annual Torch Run and other charity activities.

Detective Kent has been an active participant since 1988 and a coordinator since 2008.
