Council reinstates Douglas bus route, installs new lighting system for city

Councillors spent much of Monday evening’s city council meeting listening to numerous presentations pertaining to all sorts of concerns from citizens, local groups and businesses.

Council first saw a request for an exemption from the peddler and tradeshow licenses requirements with the hope that fees could be waived in benefit of the organization to allow its event to be feasible.

Council then was presented with plans and programs by North Bay Hydro in regards to the Home Assistance Program for Homeowners and Tenants, to improve efficiencies for qualified low income earners.

Council also announced improvements for the Veteran’s Field, as well as bringing Douglas and Algonquin Street residents back their city buses in the form of a compromise.

Also brought up during the meeting was the new LED lighting system that the city has implemented through North Bay’s whitely lit streets, with councillors highlighting its long term low cost and daily energy savings.

The most complicated issue of the evening was regarding the arbitration process with groups like the North Bay Firefighters and the province are less than transparent or fair, with discussion flowing regarding the city’s reluctance to raise taxes to continue paying the high costs associated with negotiations and services.
