North Bay’s Motorcycle Ride for Dad will launch their 2013 fundraising campaign for prostate cancer research and awareness at the Northgate Shopping Centre (in front of the Scotiabank) on Saturday May 04,, 2013 @ 11:00am. The launch marks the beginning of their nine week fundraising initiative to gather support and pledges for their motorcycle ride being held in North Bay on Saturday June 15, 2013.

The ride will be a day of fun for a serious cause. Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed men’s cancer. One in seven Canadian men will be diagnosed with this disease, and twelve will die from it today.

“Prostate cancer is a needless killer for men,” said Chopper Cameron, co-chair of the Nipissing chapter. “The more the community is aware and educated about prostate cancer, the less chance there is to lose the men in our lives to this terrible disease. The Motorcycle Ride for Dad not only raises funds to fight this disease, but it also gives men and their families a reason to talk about it”.

“This Ride attracts hundreds of motorcycle enthusiasts from our region that want to give back to their community, but we also want non-riders to get involved by becoming a champion, making a donation, or volunteering at the event,” says Chopper Cameron. “Last years ride raised over $33,000 as well as awareness in the Nipissing region, and this year our objective is to raise an additional $35,000 and we need the communities support to reach these goals. We encourage everyone to reach deep into their pockets – do it for your dad, your brother, and your friends!”

One of the unique things about our fundraising efforts is that every dollar raised in our community stays in our community. This year we are proud to present a research donation to Dr. Sandra Stewart, Director of Research at North Bay Regional Health Centre. The cheque in the amount of $16,500 will fund an innovative research study. “With this donation, our research will be able to examine and further our understanding of the complex decision making process when patients are choosing and accessing treatment options for prostate cancer.” She further states, “This study will provide a framework that will help support decisions pertaining to enhancing local capacity to provide service and treatment for these patients, at the right time and close to home.”

And yes, “everyone can participate riders and non-riders alike” says Celebrity Ride Captain Mitch Belanger of Rogers Radio.

The TELUS Motorcycle Ride for Dad is Canada's largest annual motorcycle event dedicated to fighting prostate cancer through research and awareness. From its humble beginnings, the Ride for Dad has grown to include 30 cities in every province in the country. Today, more than 100,000 men, women and children have been involved, raising more than $8.7 million to fight prostate cancer.
