The North Bay District of the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) advises that the spring freshet is well underway in Sturgeon-Nipissing-French Watershed with recent rain and melting snow. The ministry would like to advise of potential high flows in the Sturgeon River as levels increase with the rain and melting snow pack in the northern part of the water shed.

The ministry would also like to advise of increased flows in the French River below the Public Works and Government Services dams as water is released from the lake to offset increased inflows. It is expected that these flows will last through the weekend into next week.

While there is no immediate risk of flooding on Lake Nipissing, the lake’s level is 17 cm above the long-term average and is expected to continue to rise through the weekend as the recent rain and melting snow makes its way into the system. Lake Nipissing is still below the summer operating range by approximately 30 cm and still well below the flood limit elevation.

Streams and rivers are also very dangerous at this time of year. MNR advises all residents to keep their children, pets and themselves away from lakeshores and riverbanks. Shorelines can be extremely unsafe.

MNR monitors spring water levels on a provincial basis through the Surface Water Monitoring Centre and provides flood advisories to municipalities. Local municipalities are responsible for flood response, and can request assistance from provincial agencies in flood emergencies.
