Canadian folk singer-songwriter Rita MacNeil has died Tuesday night following complications from surgery.

Known as 'Cape Breton's first lady of song MacNeil' explored all genres from country to gospel, and earned a Juno award as most promising female artist, at age 42.

MacNeil recorded 24 albums over the course of her career and played sold out gigs around the world.

She was 68.
