The Northern Canadian Centre for Research in Education & the Arts (NORCCREA) is pleased to announce a presentation on sexual orientation, forging safer learning environments, and anti-homophobia in the field of education on Tuesday, April 9th, 2013, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in R308. Digital and hard copy resources will be available.

In this presentation, the needs, safety, and respect of all students are addressed within the context of the 21st Century school environment. Topics of discussion will surround sexual orientation, gender issues, and facts and myths about anti-homophobia education. This will include perspectives on the negative impact of sexual-orientation-based discrimination in schools, and practical strategies to reverse this effect. Policies, guidelines, and practices from Northern Ontario school boards will be discussed.

Pia Berger, a teacher candidate from Nipissing University, holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Classics from Queen's University. She is from Toronto, ON. Has a passion for language and words.


Brittany Herrington, a teacher candidate from Nipissing University, holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English also from Nipissing University. She is from Creemore, ON and enjoys cycling and creative writing.


Mackenzie Marshall, a teacher candidate from Nipissing University, holds a Bachelor of English Rhetoric and Media Studies from Laurentian University. She lives in Northern Ontario where she has fostered her passion for photography, documentary filmmaking and social justice.
