On Tuesday April 2, 2013 at approximately 9:00 am someone decided to travel on the ice with their pick-up truck. The driver went onto the ice near the Sunset area of Lakeshore and travelled along until his rear wheels sank into the ice just out from shore off Memorial Park Drive. Fortunately no one was injured, and the truck was safely removed by Bartlett’s Towing.

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) wants to remind everyone to start thinking safety first before going out onto the ice. While the temperatures are unseasonably cool – it is in fact April and our spring thaw has begun. When someone takes an unnecessary risk, it engages emergency personnel to expedite to the scene of your mishap, causing police, fire, ambulance, and volunteers to arrive as quickly as possible in sometimes unfavourable road conditions, over and above dangerous ice conditions.

The OPP are asking everyone to always keep safety in mind and stay off of unsafe ice – it is not worth your life and it is not worth the life of someone trying to help you. If you have any concern about ice conditions, it is better to stay off completely.

THINK SMART – BE SMART – BE SAFE!
