Near North Board honours Students Who Make a Difference

The Near North District School Board wishes to extend congratulations to those who were honoured as ‘Students Who Make a Difference,’ at the 25th Annual Evening of Applause on March 21. Students were selected from three elementary schools and seven secondary schools as being positive role models who demonstrate leadership in social justice issues.

The Near North District School Board took part in the initiative through anti-racism education, events in the schools and an anti-racism poster contest.

• Grade 12 Parry Sound student, Samantha Austin
• Grade 12 Almaguin Highlands student, Emily Bourassa
• Grade 12 Widdifield student, Jack Bowness
• Grade 12 F.J. McElligott student, Alyshia O’Grady
• Grade 12 West Ferris student, Nathan Oehlrich

In addition to honouring 10 nominated and deserving Near North students, the Board is proud of the children in the Early Learning-Kindergarten (ELK) Program at White Woods Public School in Sturgeon Falls. Students, along with the ELK team of teacher Mrs. Sonja Cudmore and early childhood educator Ms. Stephanie MacLellan, won for their anti-racism poster in the Kindergarten -Grade 3 category.

Congratulations to this year's Nipissing District Human Rights Hall of Fame inductee, Victory Public School kindergarten teacher, Diana Clements. Diana has championed for rights of children for many years as a foster parent with her husband welcoming 30 children into their family, and internationally with her volunteerism and support of the Shangilia Children's Home for Orphans in Kenya.
