The North Bay Police wish to advise the public that we are in the process of installing GPS Pre-Emption technology in our emergency vehicles that will work with the city initiated program.

Installations will be done as older vehicles are replaced over the next couple of years.

This technology will trigger traffic lights to turn green for approaching emergency vehicles but only when their emergency lights are activated. The light change to green is completed in a manner that does not interrupt the flow of traffic or pose a problem for pedestrians.

The North Bay Fire Department already has this technology and we are the first Canadian police service that we know of, to use this technology in conjunction with fire services.

We want the public to be aware that they will encounter more of these situations because of the additional equipped vehicles and the volume of police emergencies.

Public safety is paramount and this technology will equate to safer streets in emergency situations as well as quicker response times.
