Elliot Lake – Almost everyone has an opinion in break-an-enters and why they occur or how to prevent them. Here is a fact regarding a myth about break-ins.

MYTH - Most residential break-ins happen at night.

FACT - Most residential break-ins actually happen during the day, when the majority of people are not at home.

Our natural instinct is to think about ways to keep the burglar out, such as upgrading our locks or installing an alarm system. When assessing a property from the street, most thieves do not focus on the type of lock you have. Instead, criminals look for opportunities that improve chances for success. In the case of residential homes, burglars look for:

- Excessive amounts of landscaping and solid wood fences that help them hide from the neighbours

- Indications that you, the owner, may be away

o The presence of flyers, newspapers

o Unshovelled driveways

o Lawns in need of maintenance

o The absence of a car that is usually parked in the driveway

o The absence of appropriate lighting

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO PROTECT YOUR HOME….

Ø Clear views of all windows and doors (not obscured by bushes or a high fence)

Ø Ensure that newspapers/mail and flyers are collected, the driveway is shovelled and lawn is cut when away

Ø Leave lights on times, both inside or outside when away

Ø Install deadbolt locks to all your exterior doors

Ø Windows with a single locking devise should have a secondary security feature

Ø A safety box for valuables is a good idea. It should be stored in an isolated area of your home

Ø Store your keys including vehicle keys in a location that is out of sight

Ø Advise your neighbours when you’re away

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW……

•Police do not directly monitor alarm systems, and it may take a few minutes before the call is directed to the police

•Thieves only spend between three and four minutes in a home

•If you’re in your home when you alarm is activated, ensure you have your cell phone with you to contact police, as most alarm companies are through a phone line and your home phone may not be available

It is not strictly that items were taken from your home but burglary victims will often speak of a sense of violation. This can lead to feelings of fear, anger and emotional distress.
