St. Joseph-Scollard Hall’s Michelle Babek took the top spot in the senior category of the annual student Bridge Building Contest hosted on Friday, March 1, while Mother St. Bride students Karen Garate & Rebecca Hubley took the top spot in the junior category. The event was hosted by the local chapter of the Professional Engineers of Ontario at SJSH.

Students from four local school boards in grades 5 through 12 submitted small bridges made from only a balsa wood kit and carpenter glue and watched in suspense as local engineers tested each bridge’s carrying ability by adding increments of weight suspended below it until it collapsed. The event, which coincided with National Engineering Month, aimed to foster innovation by introducing and discussing real life technical issues faced by modern engineers, and gave students the opportunity to interact with local professionals in a casual, fun-filled atmosphere.

Bridges were judged on craftsmanship, engineering, and loading ability. The results are as follows:
Senior (Grade 9-12)

1. Michelle Babek (SJSH)

2. Kaley Piche, Ashley Landry & Francois Barbe (Algonquin)

3. Matt Bennison & Braden Johnston (SJSH)
Junior (Grade 5-8)

1. Karen Garate & Rebecca Hubley (Mother St. Bride)

2. Gabrielle Beauline & Angele Beauline (Ecole Saint-Thomas D’Aquin)

3. Alicia Gagne and Jessika White (St. Hubert)
