Fire crews respond to early morning fire on Laurier Ave.

Thursday, February 14, 2013   by: Kate AdamsDeputy Fire Chief Brian Hunt tells BayToday that North Bay Fire & Emergency Services responded to an early morning residential fire at 565 Laurier Avenue Thursday.

Hunt says Fire Crews responded to the call just before 1:30am with smoke visible and that firefighters had the fire knocked down quickly once they located the blaze in the basement of the older home.

He also notes that three residents were in the home at the time and were able to get out without injury.

“When our crews responded and arrived they did encounter smoke,” he explains.

“There was three occupants in the building but they had got themselves out, they had evacuated. So when they started to do their size up and started to look around the fire was a little tough to discover because it was down in the basement.”

He notes that due to older homes having tight areas basement fires can be dangerous.

“So our crews employed what we refer to as ‘positive pressure attack’ and were able to vent the building and locate the seed of the fire and get down in there and contain the fire to that basement area.”

“So good work to the crews cause it was a tough fire.”

The Deputy Fire Chief says the fire is undetermined at this time but does not believe there is any foul play involved.

Hunt says there is extensive smoke and water damage to the home and estimates the damage to be in the $70,000 range.

The investigation continues.
