North Bay man charged in fatal Highway #17 collision

Members of the North Bay Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Detachment have laid charges against a third vehicle driver who was indirectly involved in the two vehicle head on collision on Highway #17 that claimed the life of a Garden Village woman.

This third vehicle turned onto Highway #17 from a driveway just prior to the collision occurring.

Ronald AVERY age 60 of North Bay has been charged with:

* Fail to Yield from Driveway contrary to section 139(1) of the Highway Traffic Act and

* Fail to Remain contrary to section 200(1)(a) of the Highway Traffic Act

AVERY was issued a Summons to attend Provincial Offences court in North Bay on February 22, 2013.

Members of the OPP Forensic Identification Unit as well as members of the OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigations unit are continuing their investigation.

Members of the North Bay Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Detachment, OPP Forensic Identification Unit as well as members of the OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigations unit are continuing their investigation into the fatal 2 vehicle collision that occurred yesterday afternoon on Highway #17 just west of North Bay.

The head-on collision involved an east bound car with two occupants and a west bound pick-up truck with one occupant.

The passenger from the car was transported to the North Bay hospital but was pronounced deceased by the Emergency Room Physician.

The deceased has been identified as 31 year old Christina MCNEILL of Garden Village.

The driver of the car was also transported to hospital with what are being described as critical injuries and the lone occupant of the pick-up truck is being treated for what is being described as non-life threatening injuries.

Highway #17 was re-opened once the investigation process at the scene was completed and traffic flow has resumed.

Members of the North Bay Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Detachment are currently on the scene of a two vehicle head on collision on Highway #17 about 4 kilometres west of North Bay. The collision involved an east bound car with two occupants and a west bound pick-up truck with one occupant. One person from the car has been confirmed deceased and the other occupant of that vehicle is listed in critical condition. The lone occupant of the pick-up truck has been transported to the North Bay Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Members of the OPP Forensic Identification Unit as well as members of the OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigations unit are on scene. Furthers details of the investigation as well as identification of the deceased will be made available tomorrow morning; pending next of kin notification.

Highway #17 has been closed between North Bay and Sturgeon Falls until further notice. A detour is available via Highway #64 between Sturgeon Falls and Highway #11 north. An updated release will be issued when the highway is re-opened.
