'Trinkets are no substitute for treaty rights,' Madahbee

Grand Council Chief Patrick Madahbee says the acceptance of a Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal would be inappropriate, since the Crown’s representative in Canada has refused
to discuss the broken treaty relationship directly with First Nations representatives.

Madahbee was notified that he had been nominated to receive the medal – which honours outstanding contributions to Canada in recognition of Queen Elizabeth II’s sixty years of service to the British Commonwealth
– at a Jan. 24 ceremony in Toronto.

“I want to express my respect and gratitude to whomever nominated me,” said the Grand Council Chief. “But I hope they appreciate that, given the current political challenges being faced by First Nations in Canada, I do not
feel it appropriate at this time for me to accept this award.

“The treaty relationship promised in the Royal Proclamation of 1763 has been broken by the current federal
government. The Covenant Chain we accepted at Niagara in 1764 has been badly tarnished. Canada’s rule of law, as expressed in its Constitution and by its Supreme Court, is being ignored. The prime minister has an obligation to have the Queen’s representative involved in any discussions we have with his government about Canada’s
obligations to honour the treaties.

Madahbee said the highest honour he has received was being chosen to speak on behalf of the 39 member communities of the Anishinabek Nation.

“Trinkets are no substitute for treaty rights.”

The Jubilee Medal program is administered through the office of Governor General David Johnston, the Queen’s representative in Canada, who refused earlier this month to participate in “policy meetings” with First Nations
leaders in Ottawa.

Another meaningless award to an FN leader to appease the tension. There are many more deserving and progressive people in this country who should be receiving this award before this "figure head". What has Madahbee done for you lately except stirring up the proverbial pot!!
yabadaba 1/22/2013 12:01:47 PM Report

And you have done what, to make the world a better place?
geezer1 1/22/2013 2:17:57 PM Report

@yabadaba - More than this individual, I can assure you. You comment is just what I expected from someone who has no opinion at all so you resort to insults. Your response is as infantile and useless as the person who came up with the idea of giving Madahbee this award !!
yabadaba 1/22/2013 3:59:03 PM Report

Feel free to elaborate
yabadaba 1/22/2013 4:01:00 PM Report

What insult do you speak of? I asked a question, if you are insulted by a question, I believe you are the person with issues. If you bothered to read,he did NOT accept the award.
geezer1 1/22/2013 4:30:32 PM Report

@yabadaba - On the same token, I posed a question on a my first post and did not receive an answer except for a smart-ass response from you. In addition I am not the one in the headlines nor do I have to divulge my identity by telling you what I have done for my fellow citizens. Nuff said !!

If you would actually do any research on the Chief maybe you would feel different. Of course, most comments on here have just been out of hatred and/or uneducated. I assume that you haven't made this world any better and when someone hates someone else or can't say anything good about them they probably see something they hate in that person or something that person has that they can't have.

It appears that a lot of people don't understand that this is a demonstration of rights, not a protest of emotion.

The 'Idle No More' movement is about every Canadian losing control of their own backyard. Reducing water quality controls or dropping the requirements of developers to implement the best environmental controls puts EVERY community at risk of bad water, a factory in the back yard or a PipeLine going through on best cost scenarios.

Anyone who understands the movement recognizes the least respected people in Canada are fighting changes that will negatively effect all Canadians in every way, local and International.

Those were facts, not Rants. Please check your information before dismissing the 'Idle no More' issues.

Well we as Canadian grow with changes and if the goverment deems these changes need to be done than so be it we go with the flow and dont worry about it and if the changes create more jobs then all the better we dont get free money every month like some people we have to work for our money
tar77bass 1/22/2013 7:18:46 PM Report

To me this award does not mean much if they gave one to Justin Bieber I guess anyone can get one...
geezer1 1/22/2013 9:49:01 PM Report

Whose rights are you talking about @ oldtimer. I don't feel that any of my rights have been trampled on and I definitely don't need you or your INM warriors fighting for me but I do however take exception when a fringe group decides to block roads, briges, highways, railways, etc. and hampers my ability to earn a living. The natives have a beef with the government and should be taken their caravan of vigilantes to the grounds of Parliament in Ottawa. Lets see how long "whitey" will stand for this BS when you pitch your tents and prevent the government from governing !!
GWN 1/22/2013 9:53:34 PM Report

Having actually read the text of the treaties, I agree that something needs to be done about the broken treaty relationship. Until the Idle No More folks stop the blockades in violation of their treaty promises, I think we should stop the flow of the $34M of trinkets into Attawapiskat for starters
dgl1 1/23/2013 7:30:06 AM Report

GWN
I agree. The government should send a FN leader with the intelligence to clean up the mess in Attawapiskat and get rid of the entire incompetent Chief and council. These people have proven to the nation that they don;t have the ability to run a lemonade stand let alone a reserve. The chief does not want any outside people (any non-native) to come to her reserve to really find out what's going on. I hope, for the sake of the people of this reserve that they send in a competent leader who will make sure the people get proper housing.
I think she should be forced to sell her homes and Escalade to start paying back the money she stole from her reserve.
yabadaba 1/23/2013 9:59:54 AM Report

DGL,

That is a huge part of the problem on the reserves, the individual doesn't own the homes; therefore no pride of ownership anything that breaks stays broken.
