More than 200 students from all over Ontario and into Québec are participating in Aiming Higher on November 22 and 23 at the Education Centre in North Bay.

Aboriginal role models at Nipissing University and Canadore College are helping youth set their sights on postsecondary education at this two-day event where Aboriginal high school students get the chance to experience and explore their future college, university and career options.

Organizers are bringing back Skills City again this year. During this one-day interactive fair, faculty members will provide hands-on sessions and experiential learning opportunities relating to university and college programs. Businesses will also be demonstrating how employment opportunities relate to academic skills learned in a postsecondary institution like Canadore and/or Nipissing.

On the second day, students participate in workshops focusing on indigenous knowledge, cultural identity, and community values. Workshops are facilitated by local high school students enrolled in Nipissing’s Aboriginal Student Links In-Schools Program.

The event features performances from Aboriginal entertainers such as comedian Don Burnstick, and artist, cultural teacher and traditional singer, Eddy Robinson.

Aiming Higher is made possible through the collaborative efforts of Canadore College’s First Peoples’ Centre and Nipissing University’s Enji Giigdoyang Aboriginal Initiatives Office.
