To mark Women’s History Month, Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli is asking for suggestions from the community for a provincial awards program honouring leading women and girls in Ontario.

The Leading Women/Leading Girls Building Communities Recognition Programs acknowledge and celebrate individuals who exhibit exceptional leadership in working to improve the lives of others in their schools or communities.

Nominees require three letters of support from non-family members, and must not have been nominated previously. MPPs then submit names put forward for consideration.

“Please take time to consider putting forward the name of a woman or girl in Nipissing who makes a positive difference in others’ lives every day,” said Fedeli.

“There’s no question that we have many worthy candidates in Nipissing.”

Eligibility criteria include work to remove workplace or career barriers for girls or women; the prevention of violence against women, racism or discrimination; encouraging participation in any part of public service; and acting as a positive role model through mentoring or coaching.

The deadline for nominations is January 18, 2013 at 11:59 p.m. Those chosen for the honour will be recognized during International Women’s Week in March.

Since the inception of the programs in 2006, more than 450 women and girls in Ontario have been recognized for their leadership qualities.
