Fedeli reacts to McGuinty’s resignation

Premier Dalton McGuinty’s resignation announcement tonight leaves job creation and economic recovery in Ontario in limbo, said Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli.

“While the Premier certainly deserves credit for 22 years of dedicated public service at Queen’s Park, he needs to reconsider his decision to prorogue the Legislature,” said
Fedeli.

“Bringing business in the House to a halt does nothing to help the 600,000 men and women in Ontario who woke up this morning without a job.”

Fedeli noted the decision comes as the Liberals released thousands more documents on the Oakville and Mississauga gas plant cancellations, after first stating they’d released them all.

The documents have shown the politically-motivated cancellations have cost Ontario taxpayers nearly $1 billion.

“This is the ultimate cover-up,” said Fedeli. “We still haven’t been given any of the documents from the Premier’s office that were requested. This is his way of stalling our
investigation into exactly how much these cancellations cost Ontario taxpayers.”

McGuinty’s decision to prorogue the Legislature also kills Bill 52, Fedeli’s Private Members’ Bill supporting six-storey wood construction which would have kickstarted
Northern Ontario’s forestry industry. It was awaiting Third and Final Reading.

Fedeli added the decision also has no impact on the government’s decision to dismantle Ontario Northland as the fire sale was included in the Liberal budget, which passed with help from the NDP.

“Today’s Fall Economic Statement confirmed the Liberals’ plan to continue with their ham-fisted divestment of the ONTC. The Premier leaving sadly won’t change that,” said
Fedeli.
