Northlander makes its final run VideoFriday, September 28, 2012 by: Jamie LyleDespite grievances being filed and numerous other attempts to get negotiations back on the table, 2:00 p.m. held the last run for Ontario Northlander train as the provincial government continues the task of dismantling of the Ontario Northland Transportation Commission.
With numerous attempts at obtaining injunctions and political impasses, the ONTC has yet to make headroom with the McGuinty government as it lays out cuts to infrastructure and spending to deal with its spiraling debt.
The political negotiations, going on for months, have yielded very little in the form of positive results and today mark a final destination for the rail service.
With numerous customers and former ONTC employees obviously upset by the train cancellations, the question remains how and if the Ontario Government will maintain accessible transportation for its Northern citizens, not to mention continuing the freight and industrial transportation networks.
Job losses and economic impact within the community are expected to be severe.
