News reports out of the United States indicate that former U.S. astronaut Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon, has died.

The reports indicate that Armstrong, 82, died Saturday due to complications following recent cardiac bypass surgery.

Armstrong, who began his NASA career in Ohio, was the spacecraft commander for Apollo 11 the first manned lunar landing mission July 20, 1969, is most noted for being the first man to walk on the moon.

Later in his career Armstrong was the Deputy Associate Administrator for Aeronautics, responsible for the coordination and management of overall NASA research and technology work related to aeronautics, at NASA Headquarters, Washington, D.C.
