This September, Canadore will be adopting a specialized student success service model focusing on mental health, counselling and accessibility services.

The improved framework, which is based on a hybrid service delivery model, allows students to access support resources with a just-in-time appointment model, putting learners in touch with local medical, educational and mental health professionals around the clock.

“We have sought out a community-based solution for our students to better meet their needs,” said Vice-President of Student Services, Shawn Chorney. “Many students experience a new level of independence when they arrive at Canadore. It is our ultimate goal to support them through their transition so they can achieve success academically, in their career aspirations and in their personal lives.”

The new services will provide a seamless triage system bridging the physical, cognitive, learning and mental health needs of students. The renewed structure consists of a series of services including consultation, assessment, treatment and intervention for individuals in need.

In addition to referring students to in-field professionals, Canadore’s administration, staff and faculty are being trained in initiatives to help prevent serious mental health consequences. Programs like safeTALK, a well-known national suicide alertness program, are being integrated across the organization in order to recognize persons with suicidal thoughts and to connect them to intervention resources.

“In residence we see students at their best, and at their worst,” said Canadore Residence Manager and safeTALK trainer Rob McAulay. “Life just happens. One in twenty people are thinking of suicide at any given time. We have trained over 35 employees at the College to help create a suicide-safer environment for our students.”

A wide range of systems will be in place for students this fall, including proactive resources like an individualized learning intranet portal, in-class workshops and guest speakers focusing on reducing anxiety, a family connection centre and a mental health and wellness service dog. The College is also dedicating physical space to accommodate wellness events and a safe room for emergency situations and crisis intervention.
