(KIRKLAND LAKE, ON) – The Ontario Provincial Police is currently investigating a financial scam were a senior was contacted by individuals claiming to represent the Royal Bank of Canada. The fraudulent callers convinced the senior to withdraw funds to assist them with a bogus theft investigation involving bank personnel. The senior complied and was subsequently defrauded of thousands of dollars.

Police urge the public to be wary of callers claiming to be bank officials and asking for money withdrawals or transfers. If you receive a phone call from someone you do not know, always ask for the name of the person you are speaking to and who they represent. Verify this information by calling the company/bank yourself.

You can make yourself a harder target and that is the best defence. To learn more about phone fraud and internet scams please visit the Canadian Anti- Fraud Centre – formerly Phone Busters – for helpful tips and alerts.
