Jay Aspin, Member of Parliament for Nipissing-Timiskaming, announced today new funding on behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages to support North Bay Capitol Centre’s reconstruction project.

This funding will enable the Centre to increase its flexibility and accommodate a greater diversity of performing arts, film, and media arts.

“The Capitol Centre is the central arts hub for North Bay and much of the surrounding area,” said MP Aspin. “This investment in arts and culture is key to the economic health of communities throughout our region.”

The Capitol Centre is a non-profit arts organization that was legally incorporated in 1976. Since then it has served as a focal point in the area for the arts. Through the Canada Cultural Spaces Fund the Centre will be better able to serve the region of Northeastern Ontario by improving accessible gallery, studio, training and offices spaces, as well as a professional theatre venue to community organizations and touring artists.

“Our government received a strong mandate from Canadians to invest in Ontario’s economic future,” said Minister Moore. “By supporting these important projects, our government is delivering on its commitment to strengthen our economy, boost tourism, and support our arts, culture, heritage, and official languages.”

“This strategic investment in the Capitol Centre will open up and amplify a huge untapped potential,” said MP Aspin. “The arts not only enrich our communities and preserve our heritage but also expand and diversify our economy creating all kinds of new opportunities.”

The Government of Canada is providing $200,000 through the fund. These initiatives help arts and heritage organizations diversify their revenue streams and strengthen the efficiency of their management and business practices.
