Low water levels and an early morning headwind heightened the challenge for the 42 teams who paddled the 64 km of the 36th Annual Mattawa River Canoe Race, organized by the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority Saturday.

Stan Anusiewicz of Brights Grove and Steve Tait of Ingersoll captured the Fastest Overall Time trophy, finishing in six hours, 34 mins and 36 seconds, just one minute and 97 seconds ahead of second place finishers Christopher Weber and Joanna Faloon.

An additional 13 teams departed from Samuel de Champlain Provincial Park for the 13 km family and youth races on the final leg of the race with arrived at Mattawa Island Conservation Authority.

Matthew Beaudoin-Hayes & Megan Scheuring were the first junior team to finish with a time of 2 hours, 15 mins and 36 seconds. In the family category, Charles and Antoine Pepin took first in one hour, 58 mins and 42 seconds.

A voyageur canoe joined the race, paddled by eight OPP officers from the Sudbury District Early Response Team who were raising funds for the Special Olympics. They finished the 64 km race in 9:42:19
