The North East Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) is again proving to be a prime example of unaccountable and wasteful spending that is a hallmark of the McGuinty government, Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli said today.

Since 2006, over $250 million has been diverted from front line care to administrative costs at the 14 LHINs across the province.

“The Liberals are sitting on two years of annual reports that would tell the public how much the LHINs spend on salaries, bureaucracy and consultants,” said Fedeli.

“Exactly what are they hiding? It’s time to table those reports.”

Since 2006, the number of people on the Sunshine List at the North East LHIN has increased fivefold from three to 15, while the cost of executive salaries has increased from $416,000 to over $1.8 million annually.

The salary of the CEO of the North East LHIN has increased from $193,462 in 2010 to $250,000 in 2011. She moved her office from North Bay to Sudbury, where she lives.

In 2009, the North East LHIN wasted $4.7 million health care dollars on administration – a 51 per cent increase since it was created. North East LHIN bureaucrats also spent over $2 million on consultants in that time.

“That wasted $4.7 million could have paid for more than 5,800 MRI exams, 50 new nurse practitioners or a full year of long-term care for more than 100 seniors,” said Fedeli.

“The LHINs are unnecessary and wasteful bureaucracies that siphon millions of dollars away from front-line health care in Ontario each year, and they need to be scrapped,” Fedeli added.
