Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat Reminder

Friday, July 20, 2012   by: Kate AdamsThe cast and crew of Summer Challenge are putting the finishing touches on Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat which opened this Thursday, July 19th.

Joseph, based on the tale ‘coat of many colors’ from the Book of Genesis in the Bible, is a favourite for theatre goers.

Grade eight student Nick Boegel, who is the lead character Joseph, says he loves the program as it offers him the opportunity to work with friends who he doesn’t see throughout the school year.

Boegel says one of the challenges with Joseph is that there are no speaking roles so he has been working tirelessly to perfect his character through movement and expression to convey the story. At the same time he says the versatility of the music score, written by Tim Rice, is truly enjoyable.

“This is a really fun play because of the music, it is different and unique each song has its own different style like there’s the Elvis song there’s kind of like a cow boyish kind of music, so it’s really fun.”

Since 2003 each year Summer Challenge, an enrichment art course offered through the Nipissing-Parry Sound Catholic District School Board summer school program, provides youth ages 12-18 the opportunity to develop acting, singing, dancing, and production skills while earning credits towards their Ontario Secondary School Diploma.

Jeff Graham, Technical Director and teacher on staff, says the program has been growing stronger each year and with that the audience gets to see a high quality production at the locally.

“Summer Challenge has been operating for years and years, there was a hiatus but for the last eight years it’s been going again,” he explains.

“It’s got a good history and the shows have been developing year after year and the kids have been developing with it.”

The show runs July 19, 20 and 21 at 7pm and July 21 at 2pm in the Bishop Carter Theatre at St. Joseph-Scollard Hall.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for kids 10 and under and can be purchased at St. Joseph-Scollard Hall school office, Creative Learning and at the door show night.
