The North Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is well known for its dedicated marine unit.

The marine unit is focused on increased visibility, enforcement and most importantly to ensure that everyone using the area lakes do so safely.

This past Canada Day Long Weekend was an example of such patrols.

With a game plan strategically developed, the marine unit launched onto a variety of lakes – with visibility, enforcement and safety in mind.

The plan was not only to patrol Lake Nipissing and Trout Lake, but to access other favourite bodies of water at a variety of times, dates and frequency.

Here is a snapshot of their weekend;

 Chebogan Lake (Grant Twp) – Friday June 29, 2012 at 1:50pm – Two adult females in their early 20’s were charged with having Open Liquor in their boat contrary to section 31(2) of the Liquor Licence Act.

 Trout Lake – Saturday June30, 2012 at 12:35pm – A 28yr old Hamilton man is charged with Operating a Pleasure Craft without the Prescribed Safety Equipment contrary to section 3 and section 206 of the Small Vessel Regulations.

 Trout Lake – Saturday June 30, 2012 at 4:25pm – A 33yr old Belleville man is charged with having Open Liquor in his boat contrary to section 31(2) of the Liquor Licence Act.

 Red Cedar Lake – (Thistle Twp) – Monday July 2, 2012 at 11:00am – A 29yr old Field man was administered an Alcotest breath demand as a result of an odour of alcohol on his breath. He registered an “Alert”, resulting in his licence being seized and suspended for 3 days.

 Tilden Lake – Monday July 2, 2012 at 3:40pm – A 57yr old North Bay man was administered a Alcotest breath demand as a result of an odour of alcohol on the his breath. He registered an “Alert”, resulting in his licence being seized and suspended for 3 days.

The OPP are reminding the boating public as well as the motoring public, that while we cannot be everywhere – we will most certainly be somewhere.
