It was a frantic final week of school for most local high school students as they wrote exams, turned in papers and cleaned out their lockers before heading out for summer holidays, but one special group of students at Algonquin High School is already looking forward to next year.

In April the No Regrets students staged and documented a scenario that saw several teens taking risks that ended with a dramatic mock crash outside the school and a taped funeral, which in turn was submitted to the No Regrets State Farm competition.

The video, which was designed to help raise awareness about the dangers of drunk driving and distracted behaviour, chronicles what happens when a driver who has been drinking does not allow enough time to elapse before getting behind the wheel of a car.

In the end she loses control of the car and hits a fellow student who didn’t hear of see the vehicle because he was listening to music and texting while crossing the street.

Algonquin was the only Canadian school to win a prize in the competition.

The students now move on to a workshop in Denver, Colorado and are in the planning stages for a number of fundraisers to help get them there.
