Driver charged after police chase ends in Quebec

On June 23, 2012 at approximately 3:06 pm, three (3) members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Highway Safety Division (HSD) were west bound from the Ontario / Quebec border on Highway #63 after performing R.I.D.E. The first officer was on Highway #63 west of Thorne when he observed an east bound motorcycle well in excess of the speed limit.

The officer observed the driver of the motorcycle begin to rapidly accelerate and notified the officer in the second cruiser.

The motorcycle refused to stop for police - both cruisers with emergency equipment activated continued to follow.

The motorcyclist fled into Quebec and pulled over into a park area but was followed into the area by the OPP officer who is a sworn Special Constable for the Province of Quebec.

The driver was arrested and his motorcycle was seized and impounded for seven (7) days.

Charged is:

Guy GOUPIL, 43yrs of Rouyn-Noranda Quebec with;

 Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle contrary to section 249(1)(a) of the Criminal Code of Canada

 Flight from Police Officer contrary to section 249.1(1) of the Criminal Code of Canada

 Stunt Driving to wit speeding 110km/h over the posted speed limit contrary to the Highway Traffic Act.

He was released on a Promise to Appear and will make his first court appearance in North Bay on July 24, 2012.
