The West Ferris Secondary School Junior and Senior Concert Bands recently performed at the Heritage Music Festival in Chicago, Illinois. Bands from all over North America travelled to Chicago from May 3-5th to perform and compete.

Both bands received a “Silver” rating at this very prestigious festival.

Each band also received three adjudications on CD from highly credentialed adjudicators from the University of Notre Dame, the University of Western Kentucky, and the University of Illinois and 30 minute workshop with one of the adjudicators. They also picked up high silver and gold at the Northern Ontario Music Festival in Sudbury earlier this Spring.

Student Wayde Bowyer received an “Adjudicators” award for his excellent performance in the band.

“I was extremely surprised to have been chosen for this award. It was really exciting to be called up on stage in front of a huge crowd to accept it,” said Wayde Bowyer.

Mike Belanger, clarinet player for both the Junior and Senior Concert Band, thought the trip to Chicago was amazing.

“My favourite part of the trip was the performance. We played on an amazing stage and the sound was fantastic. I also learnt a lot from the adjudicator about tone and balance.”

The West Ferris Music Department Final Concert and Awards Ceremony will take place on June 13th at 7:00 p.m. in the West Ferris Secondary School Auditorium.
